During the Christmas break, I kept researching about lighting for luxury hotels and I came up with 5 essentials things to take in considerations while designing for this market.

GIVE ME 5!

1. Aesthetics
One of the most important things to consider is the aesthetic of the lamp. It has to be stylish and stand out, even though it’s inspired by minimalism design. Whether table lamps or floor lamps, they need to make a difference, add ambient lighting and creating an atmosphere in what has become an increasingly multifunctional space.

2. Brightness
Hotel lighting is more than just about creating the ‘wow effect’ when guests first get into the room. During my chats with the hotel managers, I found out that one of the biggest problems is that guest rooms are insufficiently lit to work, for example, to simply read a book when it’s dark or when trying to put the makeup on. Nowadays a hotel room is not just for sleeping, it’s a place to do different activities like eating, working and relaxing and so the light system needs to reflect the variety of uses and most importantly, generate enough light.

3. Quality
Lamps need to be designed with high-quality materials and with highest standards of engineering and finish, especially if they’re going to be used in luxury hotels. Guests want their rooms to feel like a luxurious home away from home and they want their lighting to be stylish and functional.

4. Efficiency
There should be a compromise between the latest technologies implemented into these lamps and their incredible aesthetics/style. Therefore it’s important to make sure their maintenance and running cost are as low as possible. For example, LEDs are now an essential solution to go green and take sustainability seriously.

5. Budget
If you take two desk lamps, one with a price tag of £29 and one of £299, both will illuminate the desk. However, design, detail and light source will define the price level. For me luxury design doesn’t mean increasing the price of a product to make it seen as luxurious, it means cutting edge design, providing excellent light level sustainability and efficiency.
